Records of the territorial governors : Edmund G. Ross, 1885-1889.

Collection, 8 linear ft., consists of official and personal papers of Governor Ross. Includes letters sent and received, a letterpress book, appointments, proclamations and circulars, legislative papers, reports to the Governor, reports from the Governor to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, expense reports, and penal papers. Materials relating to public lands in New Mexico; taxation of Pueblo Indian lands; conflicts between cattle and sheep interests in Rio Arriba County, N.M.; construction of a new state capitol in New Mexico; and other issues are also part of the collection. The personal papers of Edmund Gibson Ross are divided into three groups: (1) those relating to his career in Kansas prior to 1882 when he moved to New Mexico, especially his role in the Andrew Johnson impeachment proceedings of 1868; (2) those concerning his activities in New Mexico, 1882-1907, exclusive of his official governor's records; (3) biographical and family papers.

Ross was born in Ashland, Ohio, on December 7, 1826, the third of fourteen children born to Sylvester Ross Sr. and Cynthia (Rice) Ross. He was educated locally and at age 11 was apprenticed as a printer at the Huron, Ohio, Commercial Advertiser. In 1841 he moved to Sandusky, Ohio, to join the staff of the Sandusky Mirror, which was owned by his brother Sylvester.
